EU farm subsidies not cause of Africa crisis

I DON’T believe EU farm subsidies retard production in Africa. I think it is about time that James McGrath (Irish Examiner letters, December 21), the media and the NGOs produced facts and figures to back up their case.

EU farm subsidies not cause of Africa crisis

How much does it cost to produce milk in Africa where wages are very low? What is the price of EU-subsidised produce that is sold to Africa?

Despite all the NGOs ‘helping’ Africa, starvation there is worse than ever. Maybe NGO personnel would be more effective if they spent less time posturing in front of the TV cameras and did a little bit of work on the ground.

The real reason for the crisis in Africa is rule by gangsters who feather their own nests and let their people starve.

It would be nice to let the market set the price for all means of production, including labour. Hopefully, Mr McGrath would agree that unemployment benefit should be abolished because it removes labour from the market along with low corporation tax rates and the tax breaks for the building industry which distort the labour market.
