Uncle Jim can still breathe easy

I REFER to the letter headlined ‘Be kind to old nicotine addicts’ (Irish Examiner, Nov 11).

Uncle Jim can still breathe easy

Neither age nor nicotine contentment places any smoker beyond redemption. Even at 74, a lifelong smoker’s breathing and overall health could show amazing improvement within 90 days of ceasing to inhale the 4,000 plus chemicals that arrive with each puff.

Is your correspondent advocating that we stop helping long-term smokers, like his Uncle Jim, once they reach a certain age? It could be that Uncle Jim’s most rewarding years lie ahead, or that the next pack contains the spark that prematurely deprives him of life itself.
