The Sweep – our first lottery gets a new spin
This lottery was based on major horse races and with the catch-call ‘If you’re not in you can’t win,’ it had millions of people seeking tickets worldwide.
Tickets for the Sweepstakes were sold in over 130 countries. Authorised by the governments of the day and promoted internationally, the Sweep offered huge prize money and raised millions of pounds for Irish hospitals.
A documentary film is now being made that will tell the story of the Irish Hospitals’ Sweepstakes. The producers would like to appeal to readers who may have stories about the Sweepstakes.
We would like to hear from those who won prizes either in Ireland or abroad. We would especially like to hear from people whose relatives in the USA or Canada were winners or were involved with the distribution of Sweepstakes tickets.
