Why should we be blamed for the Congo?

IN his letter headlined ‘Our shameful footnote to Congo horror story’, John O’Shea of GOAL (Irish Examiner, November 8) referred to the millions that the Irish Government donated in aid to Uganda each year, giving rise to ‘suspicions’ that it somehow helps that country to perpetrate human rights abuses and other illegal activities in the Congo.

Why should we be blamed for the Congo?

He also said the Irish Government must shoulder its share of the blame for international inaction in the face of the dreadful atrocities being perpetrated in the Congo.

It seems to me that the only suspicions are those harboured by Mr O’Shea himself. After all, our Government isn’t responsible for the war in the Congo.
