Tsunami donation is a national disgrace

I WAS outraged by the Irish Government’s paltry response to the tsunami disaster in Asia: first E1 million, then E2m, and now E10m. For a nation that lost millions dead and displaced in the Great Famine, this donation was a disgrace… typical crumbs from the rich man’s table.

In no way did it match the scale of the disaster, even as it was unfolding. A pittance, compared to the stacks of brown envelope money passed around in the last 30 odd years.

Seeing the traditional generosity of the Irish coming out, as always, the Taoiseach upped the aid package to 10m the same as Portugal, a much poorer country.
