DATA communications is a key input into virtually every sector of the economy and has become an intrinsic part of our daily lives.

As well as high-speed data connectivity, broadband (DSL) can also provide services such as voice telephony, broadcast television and video on demand; further new applications are likely to emerge.

Some British companies are already providing a limited range of services whose cost is dependent on the rate at which the end-user can download the data being provided.
