Snack shock at luxury hotel
Recently I attended a public meeting in a Cork city hotel. In spite of its high star rating, we had to stand for the duration of the talk, which started half an hour late. This meant that we were on our feet for about two hours as there was a shortage of chairs.
After the meeting we ordered tea and biscuits for four. The waitress explained in her best English that there would only be six biscuits on the plate. Did we need extra? Figure-conscious ladies that we are, we decided six would be fine.
The table was meticulously set, with large white linen napkins, silver cutlery and china. Eventually our order arrived. A half-moon shaped plate similar to that in which your vegetables are served, with two chocolate chip cookies and four smaller and even plainer ones, as well as our two pots of tea.
We indulged eagerly, one and a half each! The bill arrived in a leather-bound booklet: €14.50!!
I accept that we had to pay for our “luxurious surroundings”, but can anyone persuade me that we got value for money even taking this into account?
