Clinical view of an unfamiliar disorder

UNTIL I read Feelgood (Irish Examiner July 16), I always believed I used my local gym to improve my appearance, fitness level, state of health and social life.

But after reading the article entitled ‘Adonis Complex’ I now realise that I have been deluding myself, that I suffer from ‘body dysmorphic disorder’ and all the lads I chat with in the gym are fellow sufferers.

Thank you for highlighting this condition of which I was not aware.

I realise now that what I must do is to cancel my gym membership as soon as possible and get myself admitted to a clinic before it’s too late.

I seem to recall that one was recently in the news regarding its failure to halt the deteriorating condition of a young lady who suffered from anorexia nervosa and who subsequently died.

On second thoughts, I’ll stay with my gym. Usually Feelgood is a good source of information on health and nutrition. We do not need to read about people touting for business by medicalising every human motive.
