AS a participant in a weekly silent peace vigil in Houlton, Maine, USA, I am always amazed at the reaction to us. We began over three years ago as ‘Women in Black.’

Some of our husbands joined us and we metamorphosed into ‘Stand With Us For Peace’ - the words on our sign.

On the first full day of our country’s invasion of Iraq, a man stopped his truck in the middle of the street and angrily yelled: “You wouldn’t think peace was so great if bombs were falling!”
