Let’s honour a star on and off the field

HE’S played 505 games for Manchester United, scoring 33 goals. He’s won the Premiership six times, the FA Cup three times, the European Champions League, the European Cup Winner’s Cup, the European Super Cup and the League Cup.

Let’s honour a star on and off the field

This makes him Manchester United’s most decorated player ever.

He became the first Irish player to represent his country from every level from under-15 to senior.

He was capped 56 times for the Republic of Ireland, scoring four goals and also played in the World Cup. He’s experienced promotion and relegation with Wolves.

He was selected in the English Premiership’s team of the decade. He even played minor hurling for Cork.

Of course, that is the CV of one of the greatest people ever to come out of Cork - Denis Irwin.

That is why he deserves to be given the Freedom of the City alongside Roy Keane and Sonia O’Sullivan.

Let the Irish Examiner campaign for Dinny to be honoured in this way. The man’s a legend and a credit to Cork.

Just because he’s retired doesn’t mean he should be forgotten.
