Match report was unfair to St Fintan’s

I REFER to your coverage of the Harty Cup semi-final played on Sunday February 16 between St Flannan’s College, Ennis, and my school, St Fintan’s CBS, Doon, under the ludicrous headline “Doon fails to deliver.”

Match report was unfair to St Fintan’s

Your correspondent refers to Doon entering the match as slight favourites. In view of the fact that my school (282 currently on roll) has never before contested a Harty Cup semi-final and St Flannan’s have virtually monopolised Harty finals for the last 60 years (winning 19 titles), most informed readers must have been concerned as to the journalist’s frame of mind when penning his piece.

If I had learned that due to a flu virus assailing the sports department of the Irish Examiner, it had been necessary to conscript the theatre critic to cover the game, I would be disposed to take an indulgent view. But as it appears under the byline of Brendan Larkin, GAA correspondent, I am left with no option but to conclude he must have had more pressing matters on his mind when rushing to meet his deadline.
