Leave the Dáil, but give power to the provinces

I AGREE with Martin Murphy (Irish Examiner letters, Nov 4) regarding over-investment in Dublin.

Leave the Dáil, but give power to the provinces

However, for historical reasons, I do not feel that moving the Dáil outside Dublin is the solution. Rather I would prefer to see Government fully decentralised and, instead, a four parliament/provincial federalist Ireland created. This would be assemblies for Dublin, Leinster, Connacht, Munster.

The federal government would allocate revenue to each province. No longer could Government ministers from Dublin use their power to tell us what to do, save in areas of foreign policy. Capital allocated by the federal government would vary depending on the economic strength of the regions, ie, Connacht might get more than Leinster because it is largely an economic blackspot. Likewise corporate tax rates would vary from province to province.
