Irish on brink of sporting history

THE moment of truth dawns for Ireland in Melbourne tomorrow morning.

As former international Donal Lenihan writes in the newspaper today, there are no second chances. By breakfast time, we will know if we rank among the top four nations in world rugby.

With a favourable hop of the ball, the Irish team has an excellent chance of fulfilling that dream. We have an extremely professional, highly motivated squad, led by an outstanding captain in Keith Wood, a player who has become an ambassador not only for rugby but also for his country.

Under his inspiring leadership, the players have the capacity to advance further in the World Cup.

If they beat France and they can it would be a marvellous achievement, not alone for the 40,000 Irish people at the ground in Melbourne but also for the millions of supporters at home.

We join them in saluting an Irish team poised on the brink of history.
