Let’s help the innocent

RECENT reports from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch detail atrocities in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) which include rape, torture and the widespread use of child soldiers.

Amnesty has warned that the DRC cannot achieve peace unless the government acts to stop these atrocities and brings to justice those guilty of human rights violations.

Ireland’s status as EU president gives us, possibly for the last time, a voice in the international community far beyond our size.

I ask the Taoiseach, Minister for Foreign Affairs and anyone else in a position to do so, to speak up for the

innocent Congolese people.
