ACCORDING to a reply in the Dáil, it costs from €67,700 per year to maintain a juvenile offender in Loughan House and up to €232,100 for an adult prisoner in Portlaoise.

The taxpayer foots the bill and neither the criminals nor their families have to contribute anything.

According to an unofficial report, meanwhile, it costs from €36,000 to €60,000 per year to maintain an elderly person in a nursing home. They and their families are obliged to pay crippling contributions towards the cost of residential care.
