Tackle issues like crime before speeding

READING the headline “Cameras to catch a million speeding drivers” (Irish Examiner, August 2), annoyance and disbelief surfaced within me.

I am not denying that there are far too many killed on our roads. But the frustration emanates from a sense that if there are problems in our country - and there are many - this Government will focus its energies on sorting out the easier ones, especially if there is a couple of bob to be made. In this case, motorists are sitting ducks: they have no choice but to pay the fines.

There’s more talk of sitting ducks on the letters page in the following day’s Irish Examiner (August 3). Mike ‘The Quill’ Ryan calls for urgent police action to prevent criminals breaking into elderly people’s homes in the Limerick area.
