The vagaries of real life can often collide head-on with the best-laid plans of politicians, as Taoiseach Simon Harris knows.

His meeting with president Joe Biden in Washington DC today was originally meant to include a reception in the Rose Garden to mark 100 years of Irish-US diplomatic relations.
