Maria Bailey affair - Calling it as it is

Even if it is difficult to be certain that all or even most of the details of the political decision-making process are in the public domain, it is never too difficult to tell right from wrong.

Or at least it shouldn’t be. It is therefore surprising that at this late juncture Fine Gael Deputy TD Maria Bailey’s future as a politician is still in question.

FG’s Louth TD, Fergus O’Dowd, entered the fray yesterday when he, admirably, became the first FG public representative to publicly call on Ms Bailey not to stand for the party at the next election.

“I’d prefer if she didn’t stand,” he said.

Whether his call was provoked by the impact Ms Bailey’s candidacy might have on FG votes or because of some other judgment or intervention only he knows can tell.

It is, however, disappointing he had to make this intervention as it is just a statement of the obvious. What a pity the inaction of those who might feel entitled to censure him made his intervention necessary.

Especially as they would be apoplectic — faux or otherwise — were this a Fianna Fáil Government and Ms Bailey a FF deputy. Low standards in high places indeed.
