Ancient fears all too obvious: Why can’t we transcend old hatreds?

Recent days brought the old questions about division back into a sharp focus. Not only that, the force used to express hostility, and a living-in-a-bubble indifference to how these islands have evolved, begs a disheartening question: is there a minority that does not want to move beyond centuries-old battle lines?
The most recent of those reminders was the churlish reaction of a minority of Irish people to England’s joyous Cricket World Cup win. That small-mindedness, however, pales when compared to the rancid views expressed, primarily online, about Eoin Morgan, the Dubliner who captained England.
