Keane’s return – Winning mentality is welcome

LOVE him or hate him — and opinion on that is sharply divided — there is no denying Manchester United captain Roy Keane is one of the best players ever to don the green jersey of the Republic of Ireland.

Keane’s return – Winning mentality is welcome

He is also the most controversial for the manner of his departure from the World Cup soccer squad after an open row with then manager Mick McCarthy two years ago.

Some will never forgive a perceived betrayal of the national interest and will resent his return. But the silent majority of Irish fans will applaud the announcement that he is making himself available for selection for future international games.

Under Brian Kerr’s astute management, and with the formidable Keane in the engine room, the emerging Irish team would be a powerful force.

Ever since his departure from the international scene, his future has been the stuff of argument and speculation. On his retirement, the United captain said it was always his desire to play again for Ireland but that medical advice had ruled this out. How things have changed.

In contrast with his stormy break with McCarthy, Keane’s return to international football in the Kerr era of subtle man-management is a tantalising prospect.

Above all, he wants to win.
