Revenue clampdown – No tears will be shed for tax cheats

WITH Monday’s deadline looming for tax defaulters, it is not surprising to learn people are still coming out of the woodwork to make a clean breast of their cheating past.

What is surprising, however, is the sheer number of defaulters coming under the icy gaze of the Revenue Commissioners.

In the past 24 hours alone, a virtual tidal wave of 1,500 tax dodgers made voluntary disclosures. This overnight rush to own up illustrates the success of the Revenue clampdown outlined by chairman Frank Daly at yesterday’s session of the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee.
