Securing their future too

There are many services for those who worry about who will look after their pet should they no longer be able, writes Helen O’Callaghan.

Securing their future too

ONE phone-call to Dogs Trust last summer stands out in marketing manager Kathrina Bentley’s mind. The caller was an Offaly-based woman, in poor health, with a poignant question — “Can I leave my two dogs to you in my will?”

Immediately, Bentley realised it was time to bring forward the roll out of the Canine Care Card, a free service offered by Dogs Trust, which gives peace of mind to dog owners, who worry about who will look after their four-legged friend if they pass away. Once a pet is registered with Dogs Trust — Ireland’s largest dog welfare charity — the organisation promises to match it with a responsible, loving new home, no matter how long this takes. “It gives peace of mind to the owner, knowing their dog will be looked after should the pet outlive them,” says Bentley.
