Clodagh Finn: Cork City dwellers pass this campaigning nationalist every day, but few know her name
Nationalist Caroline Douglas, the marchioness of Queensberry, is one of only two women honoured on the National Monument in Cork. Her name, though, is written as 'Catherine' and no surname is given. There is some suggestion that the names Catherine and Caroline were interchangeable in the 19th century, but in all other references, the woman described elsewhere and on the monument as 'the devoted friend of the Manchester Martyrs' was known as Caroline.
Caroline Margaret Douglas. The name has a familiar ring to it, but I wonder how many know anything about this woman, a fervent nationalist and friend of Napoleon III, who is commemorated in the centre of Cork City.
She’s located in a very prominent place, although she is not exactly conspicuous because she is one of just two women inscribed on the National Monument on the Grand Parade. Her name, like that of Anne Devlin, featured here recently, comes at the end of the list too, as if tacked on as an after-thought.
