Inadequate, confusing road signs driving tourists around the bend

The only way you can follow Irish road signs is if you know where you are going. The erratic signposting is ‘driving tourists around the bend’.
Inadequate, confusing road signs driving tourists around the bend

Even Irish people on holidays or on business are confused. Worse, roads are now numbered in some places, but have no name plates. The spelling of name places has also changed. When I queried the reason for this, I was told “we are now in the EU.” Everyone has experienced road signs that are either inaccurate, don’t give adequate notice of upcoming junctions or turn-off points, or don’t follow any continuity. This leaves motorists scratching their heads anytime they have to make a decision on which way to go. This is not good for tourism.

A Regional Roads Design Programme is promised by Cork Co Council, which I welcome, but, in the interest of road safety, I would prefer a nationwide system. A question of road safety also arises, because, as drivers make allowances to understand signposting, they could possibly cause a danger to other motorists — by undertaking potentially dangerous manoeuvres.
