Those on housing list could build their homes
If Niall Mellon can get housing built for the townships in South Africa, based on voluntary labour, why not here in his own country?
Developers claim that it would not be financially sustainable to build social housing, as materials and labour costs are on the up.
Labour costs alone are 30%- 40% of building costs — this could be substantially reduced by voluntary labour, based on Mallon projects in South Africa. Those on housing waiting lists and social welfare could form most of the labour supply, which could be based on reward for hours. You could even pay 5%-10% on top of social welfare, as an incentive to recruit workers.
