Another river tragedy

Considering the number of coastal drownings and accidents that have occurred over the past year, most people in Ireland are now aware of the danger that high winds, high waves, and rough seas pose for offshore boaters.

But, as the most recent tragedy on the Shannon reveals, fast-flowing rivers can be equally dangerous, particularly after the recent floods.

One man died in hospital after he was rescued from the River Shannon in Limerick in the early hours of Thursday morning. He was one of four taken from the water after a rescue operation was launched by swiftwater rescue technicians from Limerick Fire Service. They discovered the men clinging to the sides of the small boat.

Anyone who takes to the sea, river, or hills in bad weather and without proper preparation does so at their peril. They also place in danger the brave men and women who are tasked to come to their aid.

Even in the midst of tragedy, the courage and efforts of rescuers to preserve life should not be forgotten.
