Kenny’s sympathy isn’t followed by action

Yet again Enda Kenny stood up and read a speech someone else had written for him about abuse.

He articulated revulsion at another vulnerable person being abused in our society.

In all the years he has been a TD no one can identify a single issue Mr Kenny personally and truly identified with and that includes doing anything to help the victims of State facilitated sexual and physical abuse.

His claims to be defending victims rings hollow in 2016 and is in poor taste.

Once the election is over Fine Gael will revert to type (it does nothing for poor or vulnerable people) and we’ll find out that the HSE is fighting the family of its latest abuse scandal through court to avoid being held to account and paying large compensation bills.

Mr Kenny spoke about the Cloyne Report too but he didn’t actually do anything afterwards.

The Catholic Church still owns the physical assets of our education system. It still hasn’t paid up its proper share for the compensation bill to its abuse victims.

A Taoiseach who really cared about the people who were abused would make sure the few million required to secure funding for rape crisis services was in place.

He would ensure that, although there isn’t money to address every need, that at the very least, enough money to provide for the needs of the most vulnerable in society; those adults and children who have been sexually and physically abused, was in place.

You’d think that would be a higher moral priority than cutting the USC.
