In his letter (Irish Examiner, December 24) Joe Brennan calls the EU, in which nearly 30 democracies signed a treaty to cooperate in matters of mutual interest, a ‘disdainful and ailing European Union’.

Don’t forget the origins of the European Union

He ignores that this is a continent which in the not too distant past was reduced to ruin by wars between imperialist and totalitarian powers in which millions of citizens were exterminated.

He ignores that in contrast to the past, all EU countries now have a democratic system in which all citizens are equal.

He might also remember that the ECB came to the aid of this country when it was bankrupted.
