The EU is not perfect but it is not a dictatorship
The EU is made up of nearly 30 democracies all of whom signed a treaty to co-operate with each other in matters of mutual interest.
This situation replaced a situation a mere three-quarters of a century ago, and remembered by many still living, in which there was an all-controlling dictatorship at the heart of Europe.
That dictatorship exterminated millions of its own citizens.
That dictatorship also reduced the continent to ruins in a row with another dictatorship further east which also exterminated millions of its citizens.
The row between them was to decide which of them would control the continent.
The EU of nearly 30 democracies is less than perfect but it is much better than the alternative.
