When Joe Brennan tells us that the EU is ‘an all-controlling dictatorship at the heart of Europe’ his declaration does not accord with the facts [Letters, October 8].

The EU is made up of nearly 30 democracies all of whom signed a treaty to co-operate with each other in matters of mutual interest.

This situation replaced a situation a mere three-quarters of a century ago, and remembered by many still living, in which there was an all-controlling dictatorship at the heart of Europe.
