Halal and Kosher rituals should be abolished

The appalling act of cruelty meted out to a family’s pet terrier dog who died after his throat was cut has been the subject of rightful condemnation (Irish Examiner, August 18).

Halal and Kosher rituals should be abolished

However everyday in Ireland, live fully-conscious animals are killed in exactly the same way under licence. The best known of these rituals are Halal and Kosher.

These are relics of a bygone era allowed 60 years after we adopted humane killing methods in abbatoirs.

It is time not to confuse religious freedom with ignoring standards of common humanity and end this barbaric practice.
