Now is time to extend voting to diaspora

While the majority of the country’s adults warm themselves in the glow of Saturday’s referendum result on same sex marriage, at least one major question has emerged from the determination of many voters to exercise their constitutional right — despite the daunting fact that that they no longer lived and worked in Ireland.

As a result of this remarkable and welcome result, is it not now time to broaden the scope of the present categories of electors who are allowed a postal or proxy vote?

Let our diaspora vote.

Surely it is right that every person on the electoral register who wants to vote in a referendum or a general or local election should be given every opportunity to do so?

Anything less is discriminatory.

And as the outcome of the same sex referendum clearly demonstrated, Irish people are not in favour of discriminatory practices.
