113-year-old Irish woman is living history

Your report on centenarian Kathleen Snavely, from Co Clare (Irish Examiner, February 16), the oldest living Irish-born person, who turned 113 on Monday, was a welcome respite from the media-led indulgence of so-called ‘celebrities’.

113-year-old Irish woman is living history

However, the life of this extraordinary lady should not be confined to a small report in your newspaper. Ms Snavely, a resident of Syracuse, New York, has lived through two world wars, the great depression and 18 American presidents. Before her departure to the USA, in 1921, she lived in an Ireland under the British rule of King Edward V11. She lived through the Lockout of 1913, the Great War of 1914, the Easter Rising of 1916, the 1918 general election, the first Dáil Éireann, in 1919, and the War of Independence.

As we approach the centenary of some of these seismic events, surely RTÉ, as the national broadcaster, should interview this remarkable lady and capture her recollections for posterity?
