THE DECISION by Aer Lingus to recommend acceptance of the latest offer for the company from International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways, puts the Government on the spot. Either it or Ryanair can effectively block the sale.

For Ryanair, which holds nearly 30% of the company, this is essentially a commercial decision. But for the Government, it’s different.

It’s certainly a commercial decision, but that is the least of it. This is a hugely important strategic decision for the country. It’s a vital part of our air bridge to the world. And there is a lot of politics involved, for a Government in a very tight political corner.
