Proud to see Delaney as captain of Palace

Congrats to Damien Delaney on captaining Crystal Palace on Alan Pardew’s first Premiership game in charge at Crystal Palace. Also his deserving “man of the match” award.

Proud to see Delaney as captain of Palace

Damien has his roots in Blackrock and his father Finbarr and uncle Ger have and were heavily involved in sport all their lives.

Douglas, I know, would like to claim him (he played with Avondale United and Cork City) but more important is the fact that another Corkman is playing in one of the top leagues in the world.

He is the first ever Blackrock man to captain a premiership team, a great honour.

I was fortunate to have met him several years ago at an Avondale United golf classic and he left a lasting impression due to his humility and pride in his native city.

He may not have the medals Denis Irwin and Roy Keane have but his rebel heart is as big. Well done Damien. Up the Rockies!
