Sinn Féin’s aim is to build a nation of equals

Sean Goulding’s letter (Letters, November 30) appears to be the latest in a growing number reacting worryingly to the steady rise in support for the Sinn Féin party.

Sinn Féin’s aim is to build a nation of equals

What is amazing about the warnings made in his letter is their weakness in substance.

Sean argues, for example, that Sinn Féin’s policies of divide and rule will echo those of previous British administrations on this Island.

But surely such a claim doesn’t stand up to scrutiny when one considers that Sinn Féin’s stated aim has always been to created an Ireland of equals? Are we not currently living in a divided society through failed political policies?

Sean Goulding also argues people should avoid supporting Sinn Féin because (a) it has has little fiscal experience and (b) its policies will plunder the wealth of that section of the electorate who do not support it.

But surely the main reason why so many are today looking towards Sinn Féin as a likely contender for Government is precisely because it hasn’t, unlike Fine Gael/Fianna Fáil/Labour, experience in ruining the economy or making pre election promises it can’t or won’t stand over.

Also, how would restructuring our economic and tax system, where those earning more would be asked to contribute more, amount to plundering anyone?

Surely the creation of a more equal society is the opposite to what Sean Goulding was trying to warn against. After all, who is afraid of equality?
