Preferential treatment in court for celebrities?

Two recent District Court determinations involving ‘celebrities’ raise issues about our justice system.

Preferential treatment in court for celebrities?

I refer to the cases of the Dublin GAA All-Star footballer, Diarmuid Connolly, and Samoan international rugby player, Alesana Tuilagi, who were both charged with unprovoked attacks.

Both men had their cases struck out and were spared not only a jail term, but a criminal record.

I have no desire to see people go to prison but, in cases of violent attacks on innocent members of the public, there must be some consequences.

Both these men walked free from court with unblemished records.

However, the reputation of our justice system was blemished.
