If Hamas is fighting for Gazans, why doesn’t it attack Egypt?

Jim Monaghan (in Letters to the Editor, August 14) draws parallels between the Northern Ireland situation and that of Gaza, implying that — like the IRA — Hamas is merely fighting for the rights of its people.

If Hamas is fighting for Gazans, why doesn’t it attack Egypt?

However, if Hamas is fighting for the rights of Gazans, why doesn’t it attack Egypt which has in place more restrictions than Israel? Why has it not held any elections in the Gaza Strip in eight years and stymied all attempts at holding them? Why does it persecute religious minorities, women and gay people in Gaza? Why did it engage in a slaughter of hundreds of political opponents in 2007?

Why did it build a vast network of tunnels to infiltrate Israel using child labour and enormous quantities of concrete and other building materials that were sorely needed by Gaza’s civilian infrastructure? Why has it engaged for years in a low level campaign of firing missiles at Israel — a campaign which has done absolutely nothing to advance those rights?
