There has been much discussion about the refusal of Ashers Bakery to bake a cake that would have a slogan supporting gay marriage.

The Equality Commission seems to have overlooked that the bakers did not refuse to serve the customer because he was gay. They refused to produce a particular product; hence, they are not in contravention of the equality legislation.

If a Muslim went into a Jewish bakery and ordered a cake with the words ‘victory to the PLO’ on it, would the bakery be entitled to refuse? If a Jew went into a Muslim bakery and ordered a cake with the words ‘support the Israeli army in the West Bank’ on it, would the bakery be entitled to refuse?
