I do not fully agree with Gordon Cunningham that dinosaur bones prove the futility of religious belief (Letters, Irish Examiner, May 31).

We can seek to explain the wonders of creation scientifically without contradicting sacred scripture. We cannot deny the scientific evidence for the theory of evolution.

In his books The Phenomenon of Man and The Divine Milieu, the Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) strove to reconcile scientific views of evolution with faith. He wrote, “We are not human beings having a spiritual existence. We are spiritual beings having a human existence.” He also said, “We are collaborators in creation.”
