Far be it from me to spoil the giddy excitement aroused in native Irish media circles on all things royal over the past week.

Quite extraordinary, though, to think that at a time when the ordinary working person in Britain is questioning the millions spent in keeping the royal revelry afloat in all its guises, the Irish of all people have become its greatest cheerleaders.

I take ‘me’ hat off to them — my leprechaun hat, that is.
