Elderly alert scheme - Peace of mind

Given the vicious nature of recent attacks on elderly people, it is unsurprising that record numbers of pensioners are now turning to monitored personal alarms in a bid to remain safe in their own homes.

Proof, if proof were needed, that many live in fear in remote areas is reflected in the fact 10,000 people last year received the security equipment, which is partly funded by the State under the Seniors Alert Scheme.

Few crimes are more heinous than attacks on old people. Hopefully, members of Ireland’s ageing population — like Michael McMahon why cycled 50km through the night and checked into a nursery home because he feared being burgled — will feel a bit more secure knowing they can alert relatives or neighbours by pressing a button.
