Babies in their prams will carry the burden of debt

On Friday Oct 26, 2012 I read the following on the front page of your newspaper: “Budget of €500k for every TD and Senator was agreed — without debate”.

Those estimates for the Dáil, due to take effect last year, brought the average cost of keeping each TD and Senator to approximately€500,000 as per person annually. It was estimated to cost €112m to run the Dáil in total.

As a result of our recent referendum we still have 60 senators, 166 TD’s and quangos, advisors, regulators etc. In a small island like ours with a population of 4.5m we should only have 60 TDs when compared to the number of MPs in the British Parliament.

It is a sorry state of affairs that not one of those who were in power when our ship hit the rocks could see the crash coming. It proves beyond doubt that we are incapable of governing ourselves unless we have people in power like the economists who told the Government of the day that a crash was coming. They were told by the Taoiseach in power then to “commit suicide”.

Our present government were handed a poisoned chalice, but listening to members of the previous Government telling the present Government how to salvage our ship, goes beyond belief.

In his address to the nation recently, our present Taoiseach told us we were now free of the Troika, but what he did not tell us was that Ireland was only on bail. Babies in the pram will be paying for the bailout of our banks in 30 years’ time.
