The news story that IMPACT trade union have refused to cooperate with the launch of Aer Lingus transatlantic services from Shannon Airport is just that — a story!

Tell the real story of Aer Lingus cuts

Everybody is acutely aware that in these straitened times that job opportunities should be embraced. That is why it’s time to look behind the headlines and examine the other side — the so far untold story.

Cabin crew in Shannon are ready, willing and able to operate the new services. They have provided many years of loyal service and have consolidated brand loyalty for Aer Lingus in the south west and Stateside. Legitimate concerns have been cast aside and an ultimatum issued by the company instead of meaningful negotiations. The proposal also meant the elimination of the cabin manager grade — an important role in managing the cabin and transatlantic operations. They lead the team on board the longhaul aircraft and manage situations downroute in the United States. Over the years they have dealt with such situations as being in New York on 9/11 and more recently the Boston bombing and Hurricane Irene. Getting rid of such an important role and a promotional opportunity for cabin crew is also a legitimate point on which to expect reasonable negotiations.
