Politicians lack respect for the Constitution

As we enter the final days of debate on this irresponsibly-rushed referendum, the contributions of all politicians should be disregarded.

Those who have warmed seats in Leinster House are either poachers turned gamekeepers or gamekeepers turned poachers.

For decades, the political parties have shown disrespect and casual contempt for the spirit and intent of our Constitution.

The Constitution not alone provides protection for the rights of citizens and, indeed, for the Government; it also protects the citizens from unworthy politicians.

We, the electorate, have been remiss in trusting our politicians to live up to constitutional democracy and its provisions.

We are paying a hard price already — the price will be bigger and longer-lasting if this government succeeds in deconstructing democracy at local level, in the Upper House and even in its own party ranks.

Our Constitution needs to be updated and revised, but we have had enough destruction.

Vote ‘no’, value your hard-won Constitution, and take up the challenge of reforming our political party machines.
