VAT absurdities - Warped set of priorities

You would not think that a Facebook campaign for Vat reform would excite the public’s imagination but it has — and it is no wonder.

VAT absurdities - Warped set of priorities

A Co Meath councillor has done every taxpayer a favour by pointing out absurdities in the current Vat regime in Ireland.

For instance, Irish dancing is charged as a luxury at 23% Vat by the Department of Finance while ballet is regarded as essential and, therefore, has no Vat rate, according to the study by Kells town councillor Brian Collins.

Likewise, there is an absence of Vat on limousine hire while anyone hiring a wheelchair will be charged an extra 23% for the privilege.

Mr Collins established the Facebook campaign for Vat reform only a few months ago and has already gained 2,500 fans and the support of a number of politicians.

He deserves our thanks and congratulations — unless, of course, the Department of Finance slaps a tax on that, as well.
