The threat from fundamentalists

Irish media over the weekend has given publicity and expressed concern for the safety of four Irish citizens in Cairo.

The threat from fundamentalists

Let us recap — the democratically elected President of Egypt was overthrown by the Egyptian military. This led to protests on the streets of cities in Egypt.

Having lived in Egypt (1975-1980), I would state that protests are normally well advertised in advance. Therefore reasonably minded people stay indoors during the protests.

If these four Irish citizens went outdoors during these current demonstrations, then they only have themselves to blame for whatever happens. If, in fact, they took part in demonstrations, why should the Irish Government provide assistance?

The present demonstrations are supported by fundamentalists. Christians have been attacked (sometimes killed), churches and property looted. Today newspapers report an attack on a Franciscan Convent near Cairo and the nuns ā€œparaded through the streets like prisoners of warā€.

We recently saw on YouTube the beheading (by fundamentalists) of a Christian priest in Syria (we lived there 1980-1988).

We have heard reports of young Irish citizens travelling to Libya and Syria to engage in fighting. Some have been killed.

My personal concern is, are we producing fundamentalists here in Ireland? And how long before fundamentalists bring violence to the streets of Irish cities?
