Life’s contrasts
The security and quality of life enjoyed by some of us stand in stark contrast to circumstances endured by whole swathes of the world’s population. Everything is relative.
Today’s papers are full of guides to weekend festivals and sports, race meetings, summer schools and even the odd gymkhana.
Sadly, they are also full of the heart-rending details of the funerals of Chada brothers Eoghan and Ruairí. That their father has been charged with their murders makes a terrible tragedy something almost beyond our comprehension.
It is hard to think of a practical or emotional response that might have real meaning and offer support those so terribly bereaved. How we respond to these challenges defines our humanity and empathy. It is, however, a challenge we cannot shy away from because our response can help the unbearable be almost bearable. It is also the glue that sustains relationships and makes the idea of society worthwhile.
