We should stand up for our own people

How long before some former terrorists from Croatia, and now ‘noble’ politicians, agree with the orders from their new EU allies — that turf cutting must be stamped out in Ireland?

We should stand up for our own people

How soon we forget. This is a country once led by the sectarian hardman, Franjo Tudjman, who became president in 1992.

He once, when told 250,000 Serb Croats were “ethnically cleansed” from Croatia, said: “Our nation is now complete”.

What is the connection between Irish turf-cutters and Croatia/EU? Not a lot, and it could be considered funny until we understand that Irish land owners can now be dictated to by people like Tudjman, who won’t even know where we are on the map without being told first.

Irish politicians are wimps when they allow themselves to be the hapless messengers of mad directives from the EU.

Stand up for your own people, and stop making us ashamed of the weakness constantly displayed in the face of everything connected with the failed European (dis)Union.

Conservation and heritage is within our own gift to maintain. We do not wish to be lectured to by dodgy characters from afar on matters exclusively Irish.

This is still our land, isn’t it?
