Spunout.ie gives advice because parents won’t
Their pride and shame make them hell bent on ignoring the lives of their teenagers. Their mentality is ‘my little Johnny or Mary isn’t doing that’, yet they disdain the neighbours’ kids by saying ‘their lads are all on drugs and having sex every weekend’. But Johnny and Mary are the same age, on the same street, in the same town, and they’re angels.
Spunout.ie educates teenagers on sex, whether or not their parents ignore it. Parental denial doesn’t diminish the validity or necessity of Spunout.ie. Most people, when they were teenagers, did not ask their parents about sex. So, shouldn’t Irish parents be happy that Spunout.ie receives State funding?
Joe Duffy was inundated with calls from parents disgusted at the now infamous ‘threesomes’ article. Would they rather their teenagers learn about sex as they go along, or receive advice on threesomes, drinking, smoking, and drug use from their friends?
Sexual education is a failure in the traditional school system: teenagers are expected to learn as they go, but that Fisher Price attitude to living, as well as parenting, will only lead to more problems; alcohol and drug addiction, sexual promiscuity, and teenage pregnancy.
Irish parents should be happy that the State funds initiatives like Spunout.ie, and should be encouraging their teenagers to avail of the service.
