With the disclosures by the St Vincent de Paul Association that 100,000 citizens approached them last year for support, and head teachers saying many pupils come to school without a breakfast, it’s absurd that our government has to borrow money to give to other countries as aid.

They have pledged €7m for the relief of Syrian refugees after the civil war. Who not get their oil-rich neighbours, like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar, to supply tents, food, etc, for the refugees instead? Saudi Arabia has purchased $50bn worth of higher jobs from the UK and USA, and the 300 members of the royal family, along with the royal family in Kuwait, live in luxury.

Charity should begin at home.
